About Shillong – The Scotland of the East

Key Attractions:

Elephant Falls: Located just 12 kilometers from Shillong town, it is one of prime attractions of Shillong tourism. Here a stiff road connects to a bridge spanning across a mountain stream which slides down into two successive falls set in the basins of the fern covered rocks. Eastern Air Command of Indian Air force is also located at the same place.

Shillong View Point: This is the highest point in Meghalaya that offers a panoramic view of the spreading city below. It is an ideal picnic spot. A picture perfect surrounding gives an idea about the mesmerizing beauty of Shillong tourism.
Lady Hydari Park: Located just behind the Civil Hospital Complex, this park has a small zoo and varieties of different flowers, orchids and roses. The park is named after Lady Hydari, the wife of the governor of Assam.
Wards Lake: This is lonely manmade lake located right in the middle of town, with meandering footpaths and boating facilities. During a Shillong travel one must enjoy boating here and a leisurely walk around the garden to appreciate the colorful flowers, attractive fishes and the fountain.
Botanical Garden: Botanical Garden is located just below the Ward’s Lake. It is a beautiful garden where original and exotic plants along with rare and colorful species of birds can be seen in a picturesque setting. This is a favorite resort for city dwellers as well as tourists.
Golf Course: This 18-hole course is considered to be one of the best natural golf courses in the world. Highly regarded among golfers, this course has been the venue of many championships for professionals and amateurs.
State Museum: – This is an ideal place to get a quick insight into the life of the tribes of Meghalaya, as this Museum showcases their history, ethnography and lifestyle.
Butterfly Museum: This museum is home to a wide variety of butterflies. Some of the butterflies found here are very rare. It is located 2 km away from the town, near Police Bazaar in Jaiaw road.
Cherrapunjee: Located 56 kms away from Shillong and 1300 ms above sea level, it is famous worldwide as the rainiest place in the world. It is famous for its numerous waterfalls, limestone caves, oranges and honey.
Umiam Water Sports Complex and Lake: Located 16 kms north of Shillong, it is a man made lake. It is also known as ‘Barapani’ because of its huge size. The place consists of Orchid Lake Resort and the Lum Nehru Park. Here tourists can indulge into exciting water sports activities.
Catholic Cathedral – Situated between Dhankheti and Laitumkhrah this imposing structure is the Cathedral dedicated to May-Help of Christians.
Motphran: This ‘Stone of France’ was erected in memory of the many tribesmen from the North East who served under the British in France during the 1st world war.

Best Time to Visit:

October, November, March and April are the best months to plan for Shillong travel. Although people avoid rainy seasons but this is the time when the waterfalls are at full flow and the city looks immensely beautiful.
How to Reach:

By Air: The main airport is at Guwahati which is well connected by regular flights from different parts of India. The nearest airport is at Umroi but for here only few flights are there from Kolkata only.
By Train: The nearest railway station is at Guwahati, 125 km from Shillong.
By Road: Shillong hill station is a three-and-half hours drive from Guwahati. Bus and hired taxis are easily available.
