Tawang Arunachal Pradesh - The Beautiful Land of Monpas

Tawang is a beautiful district of Arunachal Pradesh. Located at a height of 10,000 feet from the sea level, Tawang hill station is a paradise in itself. Tawang is surrounded by Tibet in the north, Bhutan in the southwest, Kameng in the east and Sela ranges cover the western part. Famous for its picturesque natural beauty, this hill station attracts and fascinates tourists from India and abroad. About Tawang it is said by travelers that this hill station is worth exploring during any time of the year. The name Tawang was given by Mera Lama in the 17th century to this district in Arunachal Pradesh.

Tawang is an important centre of Buddhist learning and is particularly famous for its 400 year old Gompa, one of the best known in India. Tawang Monastery: About Tawang tourism it is said that no trip is complete without visiting the famous Tawang Monestery, one of the biggest monasteries in India. It was Merak Lama Lodre Gyamtso who founded the famous ‘Galden Namgyal Lhatse’ in the mind 17th century. Popularly known as Tawang Monastery, it has an 18 feet high, gold painted statue of Gautam Buddha.
Urguelling Monastery: Located around 5 km to the south of Tawang Township is the famous Urgelling monastery. It was first of the three monasteries built by Urgen Sangpo, the youngest brother of Terton Pempalingpa, the famous Treasure-Revealer. It is also the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama.
Pankang Teng Tso Lake: There are many beautiful lakes around Tawang; however the most famous one is the Pankang Teng Tso Lake. It is located 17 km away from maddening crowd of township. During your visit to Tawang Arunachal Pradesh, include this lake in the itinerary.
Tawang Library: It is a treasure house for Buddhist people. The library is a repository of thousands of block-printed commentaries and treatises on the subject of Mahayana Buddhism. This is a valuable resource for Buddhist scholars in the region. Even the paper used is produced by the Monpas locally, from the bark of the Hong Seng tree.
Bomdila: The picturesque town of Bomdila is an important town to visit during a Tawang travel. Located near Tawang, this small town is known for its natural beauty and Buddhist monasteries.
Sangetser lake: The Sangetser lake with its deep blue water is simply awesome. It is one of myriad lakes that make Tawang the splendid haven.
Nuranang Falls: It is one of the most spectacular waterfall and a jewel in Tawang tourism. It lies some 40 km before the holy town of Tawang and is also known as the Jang Falls. There is a small hydel plant located near the base that generates electricity for local use.
Singsar Ani Gompa: It is a famous nunnery still being runs by nuns. It highlights the colorful history of Tawang.
