Madurai Meenakshi Temple: One of the top ten temples of India

If you are planning to go to Tamil Nadu, then also make sure to visit the town of Madurai which is the home of the all-famous Meenakshi Temple. This Madurai temple is one of the biggest attractions in south India and is counted amongst the top ten temples in India. So, it is needless to say that Madurai takes great pride in this attraction and receives maximum number of visitors owing to its presence.
Madurai Meenakshi Temple is dedicated to God Shiva and his muse Goddess Parvati. Shiva is the reigning deity of south India and this temple is the perfect tribute of mankind to the infallible powers of Shiva. The temple was built in the 12th century AD, though many of its parts were built in the following centuries.
The moment you step into the premise of the temple, you shall be hypnotized by its mammoth size and scale! The impressive height and breadth of the temple are sheer delight to the eye. However, the interiors are almost as beautiful as the exteriors!
There are various rooms and chambers inside the temple including the Meenakshi Shrine, the Sundareshwar Shrine, the Shiva Shrine, the Hall of the Thousand Pillars and the Famous Musical Pillars and Mandapams. Each of these rooms offers something unique and splendid.
While the Madurai Meenakshi temple is considered extremely religious, drawing thousands of devotees from both near and far, it is also a masterpiece when it comes to architecture. Its jaw-dropping stonework can put today’s engineers to embarrassment.
When to visit: The temple is open throughout the year. So, you can visit the attraction anytime you want. Since Madurai has a reasonably agreeable climate, you will face little hassle, irrespective of the time of your visit.
Best time to visit: The best time to visit the Madurai temple would be during the cooler months of September-March. Though the temple is accessible throughout the year, the city can get a bit hot during the summer months. So, if you are not used to hot weathers, then you may find it slightly discomforting to stand in queues. (Most Indian temples greet you with serpentine queues and Meenakshi Temple is no different).
Timings: The temple stays open from 5 am-12:30 pm and then again from 4 pm-10 pm. It stays shut during the afternoon.
How to reach Meenakshi Temple: Meenakshi Temple is perhaps the most easily accessible temple in India. It is situated in a well-equipped city of Madurai and does not have a remote location. Cars, cabs and motor vehicles can drop you to this site easily. You can either reach the temple via public vehicles or via private means. Madurai tourism officials take painstaking efforts to ensure safety and security.
