Panch Kedar Yatra: Lord Shiva summons you for a difficult journey

Panch Kedar Yatra is perhaps the most challenging pilgrim trip in India. It is also one of the most challenging trips in the world. Panch Kedar refers to five sites or temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. These are all situated in the high slopes of mountains and cannot be accessed by any vehicular means. So, trekking is the only way to reach the sites. Though, with professional tour planners going out of their way to help the pilgrims, the yatra has become somewhat easier, still one has to be physically very fit in order to walk so much. In case you are not medically or physically fit to traverse the journey, then you must not set out for this trip. Also, get a general health checkup done and seek the advice of a doctor before starting this yatra.
The five sites of Panch Kedar are Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheswar and Kalpeshwar. Each site is situated at a considerable distance from each other. So, a lot of trekking is on the cards! Therefore, apart from being physically fit, you should also be dressed comfortably and shod with the right pair of shoes.

When to visit: Panch Kedar Yatra can be done only during the warmer months from April to October. The exact dates keep on changing every year, but this is the general timing. You cannot access the sites during the winter season since the temperature falls heavily during that time of the year. So, the officials do not permit pilgrimage during the winter.

Best time to visit: Though, the yatra is held from April till October, the tourist traffic begins to increase from May. May and June enjoy heavy footfalls which continue till September. But the months of July and August usually receive moderate-to-heavy rainfall. So, you can skip those two months. Therefore, ideally you should plan your yatra during the months of May, June, September or October. In case you wish to avoid the pilgrim rush, then be the early bird and visit the attractions during April itself.
In case you are a professional trekker carrying a training certificate, then you can even access these sites during the winter season. However, the temples would be shut during that time and you can only enjoy the panoramic and natural beauty.

Panch Kedar yatra packages are available on online portal sites. You must get yourself registered for the yatra so that facilities can be made available for you. You should also go through the essential travel tips and equip yourself with all basic medicines and protective gears which you would need during this arduous journey.
